February. To Dublin for convention. "Trying to arrange a compromise with the Bishops"

March. Return to Kimbolton. Visit of Prince and Princess of Wales - "photographed by Maddison". Cottenham steeplechase and a ball.

May. To Peterborough for a Masonic service at the cathedral and dinner.

August. Franco-Prussian war. Battles of Forbach and Woth. Decision to depart for Germany immediately. Meets with Count Alten in St Avold. Detailed accounts of his daily activities on the front.

September. More detailed entries from the Franco-Prussian war. Return to London.
