A certificate given from this town to the parish of Melford in Suffolk for Jeremy Stebbing formerly a servant to the Right Honorable Lady Dover at Cheveley Park House but not signed by the Justices. 31 March 1713
(Lady Dover, d.1726, was the wife of Henry Jermyn, 1st Baron Dover, 1636 - 1708. The latter, Master of Horse to the Duke of York under Charles II, gained prominence on James II's accession, being made Lord Dover in 1685 and appointed Privy Councillor and Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire in the following year. A Roman Catholic, he followed James into exile in 1688, Cheveley Park in the meantime being attacked by a Protestant mob. In 1689 he was created Baron Jermyn of Raystowne, Baron of Ipswich, Viscount Cheveley and Earl of Dover. Although a Commander at the Battle of the Boyne, he was pardoned by William III in 1690 and lived in retirement at Cheveley until his death, when the peerage became extinct, there being no surviving heirs. See "Dictionary of National Biography". )
