TitleBlack and white photographs of plans and survey of Mertonage and Avenels Manors in Gamlingay
DescriptionComprises one sheet covering the whole parish except Woodbury, detailed plans of the same on thirteen sheets and summary of acreages of the component parts of the two estates. Finely drawn with decorated cartouches on the plan of the whole parish and first two of the detailed plans describing the survey; decorated scales with dividers almost throughout; trees and houses in elevation.

Shows landmarks, street and field names and tenants of Mertonage and Avenals estates strips, and also owners of adjoining closes etc. in remarkable detail. Size: 18 x 23.5 ins. Scale: Whole parish; 1 inch to 48 perches (6.66 ins to 1 mile) Detailed plans: 1 inch to 14 perches (about 24 ins. to 1 mile) Surveyor: Thomas Langdon (active in many counties, 1593 - 1616). Date: March 1602 (sic: easily misread as 1601) Original MS. Oxford, Merton College Muniments 6/17 survey and plans 1-14. (This survey was made within a few years of Merton College purchasing the larger Avenels estate and thereby becoming landowners of most of the parish.

A detail from sheet 9 is reproduced in colour in R.C.H.M. Cambridgeshire, vol. 1 West Cambridgeshire, plate 29). There is an account of these maps from 1767 by William Cole in his Parochial Antiquities; MS. 5823 fos. 148v - 155v.
