TitleTemperance Group, St Ives
DescriptionLarge group of the St Ives Temperance Society people of various ages, possibly on a summer outing. Some figures are blurred, and two members on the back row and three on the extreme right of the group have been "scratched out" of the negative. According to Herbert Norris's History of St Ives, the town's Temperance Society was started by a Mr Davis in 1848, who was also the first President. A code of rules was drawn up in 1861, and the "present rules" [i.e. in 1888, when Herbert Norris published his history] were drawn up in 1873. The meetings were held in the Public Institution
