TitleMr. Brown's Steam Flour Mill, Godmanchester
DescriptionThis steam flour mill was built in 1861 by Potto Brown and Joseph Goodman, millers of Houghton, and was opened in 1862. The building was eight storeys high, lit by electricity and equipped with the most modern type of roller machinery producing the very finest grades of flour. A siding of the Great Eastern Railway ran alongside (the rails can be seen in the foreground) allowing flour to be dispatched all over the country. The view is unusual as the staff are standing precariously at the open windows and doors, some as high as six or seven storeys. The building was demolished in 1969.
