| Description | Studio portrait of the Duchess of Bedford. This is a late emulsion, and can be dated to 1895 The plate is wrapped in its original paper wrapping, on which is inscribed "359 The Duchess of Bedford". There is no entry in the Huntingdon Maddison and Hinde order book as this portrait was taken at the Hinde & Carpenter Studio at Union Bank Chambers, High Street, Bedford, which was established in 1895. An article in "Illustrated Bedfordshire: its History and Commerce" dated 1895 (accession 2638) records that the firm of Hinde & Carpenter had only been established in the town for a few months, and that "a special sitting has been given to the firm by her Grace the Duchess of Bedford. Excellent photographs have been taken of her Grace, and copies of these are to be seen at the studio." |
