DescriptionA view of the Harvey & William's Foundry. A notice reads "Harvey & William Ltd. Engineers and Millwrights. London and Huntingdon". Mr Williams and Mr Harvey established an engineering business in Southwark in 1897, and by the following year the works were going night and day with a staff of 30. However, in March 1898 a fire gutted the whole works and destroyed most of the plant. By Midsummer 1898 the business had been re-started in Limehouse, and was known as the Vulcan Works. An opportunity then arose to buy the Victoria Foundry in Huntingdon, which had been run for the past 42 years by the firm of Bayliss & Thackray, and this photograph must date from c1899 when the firm had been taken over by Messrs. William and Harvey. [Taken from "The Pictorial Record", 1899]
