ActivityLittle is known about the occupation of Sir Robert Cotton, 5th Baronet. He had studied law at Middle Temple, so it is possible he was a working lawyer.. Equally, given his usual address as Sir Robert Cotton of Steeple Gidding, he may have been principally a landowner before ascending to the Baronetcy. It is known that the 4th Baronet was embroiled in legal challenges from family members in the early years of the 18th century, and Sir Robert was one of the litigants in those cases. What is known is that he was a partisan of the Jacobite cause, and unsuccessfully rebelled against the ruling Hanoverian government in 1715, thereafter spending decades in exile in France presumably making plans for a Stuart Restoration, and attempting to win new support for their cause. Despite being Baronet for almost two decades, it is possible that he spent less than half of this time in England as a landowner.
