ActivitySir John Cotton (c.1543-1621) was a respected member of the gentry of Cambridgeshire, succeeding to the substantial lands of his father when he was already an established office-holder in the county. His good standing is demonstrated by his tenure as Sheriff before he was head of his family, and by his long service in the various local offices to which he was selected. When he was in parliament he appears to have been moderately active, serving on committees. In addition to his public service, he was noted as a talented estate-manager who continued to expand the lands of his family.
