ActivitySir John Cotton (1615-1689) was clearly most often occupied with the management of his lands, which were substantial and made even greater with his marriage to the heiress of the Hinde family around 1647. However, at an intense moment of crisis for the nation, he was clearly in two minds about whether to safeguard his lands above all or else to act on his Royalist impulses. This is why he acted at the outset of the Civil War but thereafter did not jeapordise his lands by continuing to defy Parliament. His loyalty to the crown is demonstrated by his time in exile during the Protectorate, and it is likely that this loyalty is what recommended him for appointment to local office in the Restoration era.
