ActivityFor almost his whole adult life, Sir John Hynde Cotton, 3rd Baronet (c.1683-1752) was absorbed in Tory politics, rising to become one of the leaders of the party in the Commons. He was an active member from his first years in parliament, though his prominence declined for a period early in the reign of George I (1714-1727). While in parliament he was a frequent opponent of Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Oxford (1676-1745), who praised his wit. He was also known for his pronounced stammer which he knew how to address with humour, and for the immense weight he gained in his later years. For much of his life he harboured Jacobite sympathies, which extended to extending clandestine support to the Stuart cause in the 1740s. For his commitment to this movement he has been called the last active Jacobite in England.
