PreTitleSir
Title5th Baronet, Commander-in-Chief Royal Navy; Mediterranean Fleet
Epithetof Landwade and Madingley Hall
ActivityWith the exception of the decade from 1783-1793 when he lived in retirement on his Madingley estates, Sir Charles Cotton, 5th Baronet (c.1753-1812) spent his entire adult life in the Royal Navy. He fought in numerous naval engagements and was promoted gradually from midshipman to commander of the Channel Fleet which signifies his aptitude for naval warfare. He served during three major wars and named his eldest son, St Vincent, after a naval engagement. This signifies the depths to which he was militarily minded, as does his desire to leave the service during a period of peace. His extensive time spent on foreign service suggests that he was not a particularly hands-on landlord, though his lands did not diminish during his time as the Baronet.
