Activity	The vast majority of William Fellowes' (1660-1724) life was spent not as a member of the landed gentry, rather as a well-to-do lawyer (later judge) with extensive connections among the merchant elite of London. He was clearly a successful lawyer who enjoyed a long career in the courts which was recognised by his membership of the Royal Society, but he was also a brother of the director of the South Sea Company and the son-in-law of a prominent merchant in Joseph Martyn who was wealthy enough to provide for the purchase of an estate valued at £30,000. Once William purchased his country estates, it is not clear whether he spent most of his time practicing law or living as a gentleman, however he did not retire from his position as Senior Master in Chancery.
