SurnameHuddleston
ForenamesFerdinand
Epithetof Sawston
ActivityFerdinand Huddleston (1737-1808) succeeded his father Richard Huddleston (1716-1760) at a young age after the older man died prematurely. He seems to have been a diligent man who was already playing a part in land sales before the death of his father, and may have studied at Lincoln's Inn for some years in the 1750s. If he did indeed study to be a lawyer in this time, it was a valuable experience for the cases he disputed with his wife's family in court in the 1780s. His family's strong Catholicism is one of their defining features and shaped his career because he was unable to hold office. It was also evidently one of his interests as many of his letters concern developments relating to his faith nationally and internationally. He spent the early years of the 19th century arranging for the enclosure of his lands, and much of his life was consumed with transactions and legal matters relating to his land.
