Epithetof Sawston
ActivityFerdinand Huddleston (1814-1890) appears to have had something of the character of the adventurous sportsman. Between his time playing cricket, his interest in shooting and his long sojourn travelling on the continent in the 1840s there is some merit for this view of him. However there is equally evidence of his ability to soberly hold public office and to expand the family estates in a responsible way in the 1860s. In common with the rest of his family, Ferdinand was Catholic however this presented fewer obstacles to him than it had to previous generations. He does seem to have shown some interest in his faith and to have kept abreast of Catholic news. It is unknown why he did not marry until he was forty, or why he did not remarry in an attempt to produce an heir, but what is known is that after his death in 1890 the lands of the Huddleston family never again passed from a father to a son in the 90 years that the family continued to hold Sawston Hall.
