Title8th Earl of Sandwich
Epithetof Hinchingbrooke House
ActivityLike the previous members of his family, Edward Montagu 8th Earl of Sandwich (1839-1916) was a Conservative peer who exercised a great deal of power in Huntingdonshire politics. Despite almost a decade in the House of Commons and being entitled to a seat in the House of Lords for over thirty years he did not hold office on the national scale which likely shows that central government was not his primary interest. In Huntingdonshire he held many of the same offices as had his father and grandfather - namely as Lord Lieutenant, Mayor of Huntingdon and High Steward of Huntingdon. Before his career in politics he served in the army for a far longer time than had his predecessors, but while enlisted still found time to travel to the USA with his friend the future King Edward VII. He also travelled in India and Ceylon though it is uncertain whether this was as part of his duties as a soldier. His friendship with Edward VII brought him honours including being named a Knight Commander of the Victoria Order and twice hosting the King at Hinchingbrooke. A lifelong bachelor, he had varied interests including history and spiritualism and he published three books during his lifetime, with an autobiography being released posthumously.
