DescriptionSir Pendrill Varrier-Jones (1883-1941), knighted 1931, founder and Director of the Papworth Village Settlement. The Settlement’s Annual Reports refer to Sir Pendrill’s official titles as follows: Hon. Medical Officer 1919-1920, Medical Director 1921-1935 and Director, 1936 until his death in January 1941. Dr Richard Trail succeeded as Medical Director 1941-1961 with Peter Fraser (married to Sir Pendrill’s niece), Sir Pendrill’s former assistant from 1935, as Managing Director of the Industries at Papworth and Enham 1940-1946. There are few proper records deriving from this department of the Settlement in this archive. In 1941 Dr Donald MacCallum was appointed Chief Medical Officer until Dr Stott’s return from active service in the War.
