Further information: Robert Baumgartner died of heart disease at Island Hall in Godmanchester on 10 December 1810. On the same day that he received Dr Darwin's letter, he wrote to his brother saying "I received Dr Darwin's answer today - he thinks my disorder a chronic inflammation of the large blood vessels and recommends me an ounce of white barley sugar daily, to excite the secretion of saliva and vi [six] drops of Arsenical Mineral Solution ter die [three times a day], to be taken immediately after meals - I think the remedy [a] very odd one - I am not quite decided whether I should give it the trial of a month which he recommends." He also mentions an alternative treatment, so it is not known whether he took Dr Darwin's advice. [Information from 'St Ives News and Crier', 12 March 2009, letter written by Chistopher Vane Percy.]
