TitlePenances
DescriptionPenances constituted a punishment by the archdeaconry court as part of an immorality cause, usually brought by the judge following accusations in churchwardens' presentments. For defamation the action of the penance usually meant recanting in front of the offended party: for fornication the penance usually consisted of appearing in court wearing a 'long white sheet' and holding a 'long white rod', and 'saying after the minister' the words of a public apology. The penance would then be returned to the registrar having been signed by the churchwardens and minister.
