TitleMandates for Induction
DescriptionEcclesiastical mandates are simply written commands, in this case from a bishop to an archdeacon. Mandates for induction include the seal and signature of the bishop, and direct the archdeacon to induct a clergyman to a benefice of a rectory or vicarage. After the clergyman had been inducted the mandate, along with the certificate of induction, would be returned to the archdeaconry registrar's office in Huntingdon. In the descriptions given here, the name of the clergyman, his parish, and in most instances the patron of the living of the parish are included. Although the series comprises mostly mandates for induction of clergy, a number of additional documents are also present with these records. They include certificates of induction, commencing in April 1747 and thereafter bound up with their respective mandates; subscription certificates to the 39 articles signed in the mid 19th century; and some further mandates dating from the archidiaconate of F.G. Vesey (1874-1915).
