DescriptionA group of records consisting mainly of minute books and weekly records, balance sheets, insurance policies, and agreements with railway companies, colliery companies, companies hiring railway-wagons, and employees, from the second half of the nineteenth century and the twentieth century. Also, correspondence dealing with property transactions and the wagon shops at Peterborough.

Thomas Coote & Son, Colliery Agents and Coal Merchants of St Ives, was founded in 1847. In 1908 the firm amalgamated with the London-based coal business of F. Warren & Co. Ltd., to form Coote and Warren Ltd. Warren & Co., Colliery Agents, had become a limited company in 1898. Before 1908, members of the Warren family had been partners in T. Coote & Son, and members of the Coote family had been directors of F. Warren & Co. Ltd.

The coal business covered East Anglia, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire and the London area. Besides being colliery agents and coal merchants, T. Coote & Son were railway-wagon builders and repairers, with shops at the Central Wagon Works, Great Eastern Railway, Peterborough. This business continued after 1908. During the twentieth century the firm branched out further to become grist millers, corn, hay and straw dealers, and motor engineers.
