TitleRecords of the Houghton Chapel Retreat
Description"Houghton Chapel was built in 1840 and subsequently managed as a private venture by Potto Brown and Joseph Goodman of Houghton. By the 1980s the Chapel was owned by the United Reformed Church and managed by the Free Church in St Ives. By now the Chapel congregation had decreased to some six people, it was financially impoverished and the building was deteriorating. The then minister of the Free Church, the Reverend Donald McIlhagga, concieved the idea of converting the building as a Retreat Centre with thirty beds.

The necessary construction work was undertaken and on the 1 February 1986 the Retreat opened. The chapel remained a consecrated building.

In 2010 the United Reformed Church closed the retreat and sold the chapel building to the Parochial Church Council of the Anglican parish of Houghton and Wyton. The PCC operates the building as a non-residential church centre under the name 'St Mary's Centre'."
