TitleLetter patent of King James II
DescriptionThis letter patent confirms the provisions made in the charter of Charles I, 1630 (HB1/1/13), but clarifies the role of High Steward. The Crown appoints Thomas, Earl of Aylesbury as first High Steward of the Borough, and to continue in that role for life. The first aldermen under this constitution are to be Lionel Walden, knight, Lionel Walden, esq, John Negus, Richard Astrey, James Farside, Philip Sober, Samuel Pont, William Douse, Thomas Sayers, Henry Angell, Edward Audley and Joseph Darloe. Lionel Walden, knight, is to be appointed Mayor. Oliver Montague, esq, is to be appointed Recorder. Walter Pont is to be appointed Common Clerk. The town is alowed to have a market every Tuesday.

This letter patent was automatically revoked on the abdication of James II in 1688, and the town Corporation reverted to the 1630 constitution of Charles I.
