TitleCharter of King Richard II
DescriptionThis charter reproduces the text of, and confirms the grants made within, the charter of Henry III, 1252 (HB1/1/2) and the first charter of Richard II, 1377 (HB1/1/3). The charter compliments the burgesses on their behaviour while resisting "the late insurrection," ie. the Peasants Revolt of 1381. The burgesses are entitled to enjoy and make use of all the liberties previously granted to them, including those they have not hitherto made full use of.

Witnesses: W. elect of Canterbury; W. of Winchester; R. of Salisbury; Bishops; John King of Castile; Leon Duke of Lancester; Thomas Earl of Segrave, Treasurer; Aubrey de Vere, Chamberlain; John of Montacute, Steward of the Household; and others.

Given by the hand of: the King. Note: Richard III's previous charter (HB1/1/3) had inspected and confirmed the grants of 1348 and 1363, but not the grant of 1252. This new charter, which confirmed the 1252 grant together with his own earlier charter of 1377, therefore embraced all the former charters of the borough.
