DescriptionThe Common council minutes contain the formal record of proceedings of the Council. The routine business recorded in HB/1-2 (1732-1799) includes the admission of freemen, election of aldermen and other officers (the mayor, chamberlain, 'Spital' reeve, constables, steward, recorder, deputy recorder, master of the Grammar school, master [usually the mayor] of St John's Hospital, borough surgeon and apothecary), presentation of the chamberlain's accounts and St John's Hospital, accounts, payments for apprenticeships from Fishbourne's charity (names of the apprentices, their parents and masters are usually given), payments to the keeper of the House of Correction, names of girls admitted to the charity school, sealing of documents, the upkeep of drains and water mills, fencing and the stocking the commons with livestock, lease of lands, including the bowling green and the fishery and regulation of the market.
