TitleBailiffs/ Mayor
DescriptionBailiffs were the principal officers before 1630 but appear to have left no specific individual record of their activities. Their elections were recorded in rolls of the Huntingdon Court. In 1630 they were superseded by the Mayor. Griffith's Ancient Records of the Borough of Huntingdon (1827) refers to this as a limited monarchy. It appears indeed to have been onerous job. Assistance came from the Town Clerk for legal and administrative work ,and from the Chamberlains in matters of finance. The accounts were often compiled one year by the Mayor, another as 'Mayor & Chamberlain', and another as Chamberlain. Bills are made out to either. Here we have put them under the Chamberlain.
