TitleLetter to "My dear friend", from Lady Olivia Bernard Sparrow
DescriptionEnclosing her ultimatum to the Duke. She has a duty to her late husband and to his descendants. Her grandchildren's rights were invaded by the Duke and his steward, who procured a will from Millicent during her last illness, without legal advice. She was reluctant to make the affair public until now. With the help of Lord Roden and Mr Haldane, the Duke agreed that on Mandeville's marriage the true will would be carried out but Mandeville was married in July and the real will is still concealed. The Duke has settled the Irish estates in favour of his sons "by his present or future wife" with the result that his daughter, Lady Olivia Ossulstone, and any other female descendants have been excluded. She has tried to avoid litigation and suggested arbitration with the help of the Marquis of Tweeddale but was compelled to appeal to the Court of Chancery when every overture was rejected by the Duke.
