Arrival of boy at Nice. Lord Mandeville been to crowded meets at Tullyhappy School, tenants happy to see and hear him. Similar meeting at Bluestone meeting house and hopes to have another one at Corernagh. Enjoyed his Lordships company, which was happy and profitable. Lord Mandeville will report on improvements to the school, added £5 annum to Mr.Cuthberts salary as School Master and same to Scott of Portadown. Likely to have new School Master at Leys. Had a visit from Reverend Hepensal, whose parish joins Mr Cleavers and Mr.Dalys, on behalf of the deaf and dumb. Lord Mandeville liked him, writer describes him as a "rough diamond". Latest news here is intended marriage of Mr. Carter to a Lady at Dundalk called Miss Tipping. Sister Mary much worse, she and Jane have their new houses but Mary has been mourning the death of their parents and the solitary nature of her home has effected her more. Mary was ill at Christmas, friends wanted to place her in Asylum but writer advised against the plan and Jane also opposed. Mary has been going to Verschoyle's Church. Writer has had a niece born by brothers wife. Had a letter from Monsieur Malan regarding death of authors father. There has been a great attempt at a voluntary meet in Belfast in opposition to the establishment, attended by Dr. Cook and Dr. Ritchie. Speeches went on for many hours. An intelligent school girl from Mullahead has composed some lines about the Quin controversy, which the author has copied into the letter.
