Title | Letter from John Temple Reilly, Scarvagh House County Down] to the Duke of Manchester |
Description | He is much grieved to see himself named as one of the Duke's tenants who takes advantage of a 'legal quibble' to avoid paying an increase of rent. The facts are that he took the Island in 1852 at a rent of £20 and he spent £40 in the first year clearing the land and building a labourer's cottage. Like Alexander, he received no notice of the increased rent. He is willing to remain a tenant and pay an increase, but not so much as has been stated. |
