DescriptionHe is ashamed at having discussed only the Trent in his previous letter and not wider matters. Reports circulated of the death of Lord P [Palmerston] because he was not present at the funeral of the Prince. "Have you considered what would have been our position if that report had been true?" He heard Disraeli refer to himself [Montagu] as "a mere tool of mine". Comments on Disraeli's influence over Lord Derby and the absence of anyone else in Parliament to take a stand against him.
