TitleLetter from William Burness, Regent's Park, to the Duke of Manchester
DescriptionBurness is verging on bankrupcy. Can no longer ward off a settlement with H.J. Porter relating to the charges against him during his stay in Ireland. Implies that the Duke intimidated him with the threat of disharge "for groundless reasons" when the matter was discussed in the Library at Tandragee Castle in the Spring of 1845.

In the Summer of 1843 rumours ciruclated Burness was to be dismissed during Duke's absence in the North of Scotland. Burness consequently took legal advice and was prepared to take proceedings in order to vindicate his conduct and expose that of others. Gave the Duke the chance to hear from both parties. Also complained to Duke's agent Mr.Wilson and Law agents Messrs Crawford & Russell, Belfast.

First steps Burness will take have already been mentioned to the Duke, outcome resolution will depend on the plea of Porter and those who may be brought along with him. Damages of £5000 will be demanded. Believes Porter guilty of forging accounts. Apprehensive about involving the Duke due to his bereheavement over the death of Lady Manchester.
Duke once said Burness had been prejudice against Porter but threatens that "humbling facts will now be publically made known". Describes Porter as "a man evidently void of Xn [Christian] principle" and alleges he saw Porter wink over the Duke's shoulder at Lady Manchester (then Viscountess Mandeville). Is unsure how such a man could be allowed to keep his books and act without being detected by men such as Crawford & Russell.
