TitleLetter from William Burness, London, to the Duke of Manchester
DescriptionBurness writes that the "moral and physical state of the British peasantry" has come to his attention, particularly the general conduct and domestic comforts of "this most important class" under his employment in the high and low lands of Scotland, in Ireland and England. Intends to write on the matter and advance the Christian character of their labourers and cottar tenancy. Calls for uniform wages for standard labour. Has one manuscript volume of 600 pages ready, thinking of publishing monthly 64 pages each, publishing it for cheap on account of his own poverty and that of others who may subscribe. Asks the Duke if he will loan him £20 for 12 months in order to publish the writing. Hopes the Duchess of Manchester and Lady Olivia enjoy good health and expects to hear back from his grave.
