TitleWilliam Ekins and his Family
DescriptionThe Ekins family, taken in their garden. This appears to be the family of William Ekins, chemist, of the High Street, Huntingdon, who lived at 110 High Street (Alexandra House), fronting Market Hill. William Ekins was a chemist, druggist and soda water manufacturer, and he and his wife Elizabeth had twelve children, eleven of whom can be seen here (their tenth child, Robert, died aged 13 months in 1862). Their eldest son, Thomas George, was born c1850, and can be seen standing at the back of the group beside his father, and their youngest child, Alice Maud, was born in 1864 and is presumably the little girl sitting on a chair at the front of the group. She looks about the age of two or three, therefore this image may date from c1867.
In 1880 William's business went into liquidation and their house was sold. The sale particulars describe the house as fronting the Market Place with, amongst other rooms, a chemist's shop at the front, a dining room, drawing room and breakfast room, a school room and eleven bedrooms. There was a large yard behind the house with many outbuildings leading down to a walled garden (now the site of a car park beside the old County Record Office in Grammar School Walk). Folding gates led from the yard into Cook's Lane (the old name for Grammar School Walk). See WH2/69 and WH2/50 for images of the house.
