Person NameCromwell; Oliver (1599-1658); Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland (1653-1658)
SurnameCromwell
ForenamesOliver
TitleLord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland (1653-1658)
ActivityCromwell's family was descended from the sister of Henry VIII's Chief Minister Thomas Cromwell. Thus his family was respectable and firmly in the class of the minor gentry, however his family was somewhat poor and he was forced to sell his freehold land to live as a tenant of Henry Lawrence in St Ives. When his uncle died in 1636 Cromwell became a tithe collector in Ely and returned to a more profitable existence. Thus until the Civil War Cromwell was a largely representative member of the minor gentry who had fluctuations in fortune, his chief occupations being a landowner and serving a short stint in parliament. Cromwell is best-known however as a famed military commander, parliamentarian, staunch Puritan and ultimately took the office of Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland, an authoritarian position which was in essence monarchy in all but name as he attempted to ensure his son Richard succeeded to the office. He is one of the most controversial figures in English History, variously being seen as a dictator, an unspeakably brutal conqueror, and a freedom fighter struggling for liberty from a tyrannical monarch.
