ActivityAs the eldest surviving son of Sir Gilbert Heathcote, 1st Baronet (1652-1733) who has been called the most successful merchant of his age, Sir John Heathcote (2nd Baronet) was born into a wealthy trading family which over the course of his life transitioned from being businessmen to nobility. Throughout his life, he had three major occupations: politician, business executive and country gentleman. He was a lifelong Whig, serving his party in parliament from 1715-1721 and again from 1733-1741. He failed to hold his seat in 1741, and an attempt to re-enter parliament in 1754 was unsuccessful. While an MP, he does not seem to have been outstanding, voting with the administration in every recorded division. He followed in the footsteps of his father by serving as a director of the Bank of England and the East India Company, as well as the President of St Thomas' Hospital. In addition to this, he was a Trustee of the British Museum (founded 1753) and President of the Foundling Hospital (founded 1739) though the years he served in these roles are unclear. Following his defeat in the parliamentary election of 1741, he was said to retire to the life of a country gentleman, living for seven months of the year at Normanton Hall in Rutland, which he has restored. In this time, and clearly very wealthy he embarked on a spree of purchases in Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire in the 1750s, which descended through his second son John Heathcote, FRS (c.1727-1795) as the estates of the branch of the family centred on Conington Castle until the 20th century. To John he also left the use of 4 houses in London, and to each of his daughters £12,000 giving an indication of his wealth. The bulk of his estates however passed to Gilbert Heathcote, 3rd Baronet (c.1723-1785) who inherited lands in Rutland, Lincoln and Derbyshire.
