ActivityAs the second son of Sir John Heathcote, 2nd Baronet (1689-1759), John was born into an especially wealthy family which was acquiring lands rapidly throughout his early life, and seemingly by this generation the family had stepped away from its mercantile roots as there is no record of John Heathcote having served on the East India Company board as his father and grandfather had for instance. He was educated in law as many of the minor gentry were and seems to have lived the life of a gentleman, inheriting the family lands in Huntingdonshire and four houses in London as the main family estate centred on Normanton Hall and the Barontecy passed to his elder brother Gilbert. Gilbert seemingly acquired the Manor of Great Stukeley by purchasing the shares of each of the four heiresses and granting the manor to John, which was finalised when the Earl of Denbigh quitclaimed all rights in the manor in 1771. Through his wife, the couple inherited the Manor of Chingford Earls in Essex in 1774, and between all of these estates John Heathcote was clearly a very wealthy man. He served as High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire in 1767-1768 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in the following year. He served as MP for Rutland for the final five years of his life, but according to the History of Parliament he "made no mark at Westminster".
