Person NameHeathcote; John Moyer (1834-1912); of Conington Castle
SurnameHeathcote
ForenamesJohn Moyer
Titleof Conington Castle
ActivityJohn Moyer Heathcote (1834-1912) was the eldest son of his father of the same name (1800-1892), and was born into a comfortably wealthy family of country gentry. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge University before going on to read law at Lincoln's Inn. Once he was called to the bar he operated on the Northern Circuit, and his good standing in the community is evidenced by his tenure as Justice of the Peace in Huntingdonshire, Sussex and the Liberty of Peterborough, though the dates for these offices are unknown. He was also Chairman of the Huntingdonshire Quarter Sessions and Deputy Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire, though again these dates are unknown. He is perhaps better remembered for his pursuits outside of office however; he followed in the footsteps of his father and became an amateur artist of moderate renown. His contributions to Real Tennis and the development of Lawn Tennis are his main legacies however. He was the amateur champion of the Real Tennis tournament organised by Marylebone Cricket Club 17 times and was known as the best player in the world for some years. He was one of the three commissioners which finalised the rules for the first Wimbledon Tournament which remain almost unchanged to this day, and is also credited with originating the cloth covering for lawn tennis balls. He authored or co-authored two volumes of the popular sports series the Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes.
