ActivityJohn Norman Heathcote (1863-1946) was the eldest son of John Moyer Heathcote (1834-1912) and inherited the family estates on the death of his father. Like the previous two generations of his family, he was educated at Eton and the University of Cambridge, however he did not go on to study law. Instead he was interested in nature, and received a gold medal from the Royal Agricultural College in 1889, before embarking on the work for which he is best remembered: his study of the St Kilda archipelago in the Outer Hebrides. He went to the islands, which were owned by his uncle on two trips in 1898 and 1899, and on the second occasion he stayed for two months. In this time, he climbed several sea stacks including one which he was told he was the first non-St Kildan ever to visit. Upon his return he published a book which dealt with his experiences as well as the history and culture of the St Kildans, and the wildlife (particularly birds) of the islands. He was the first person to record several speices of bird on the islands. He was an avid photographer and a gifted watercolourist, as had been his father and grandfather, and the book is illustrated with his sketches and photographs. Upon returning to Huntingdonshire, he served as a Justice of the Peace from 1906, and as High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire in 1917-1918 - both positions held by several previous generations of his family. During the 1910s, he sold a great deal of the land that his family held in the county, which perhaps suggests the family's finances were not as strong as they had been. He did however own a steam yacht called Ketch in 1933 and so was far from destitute. He never married or had children, and died in 1946, likely at Conington Castle.
