ActivitySir Robert Bruce Cotton, 1st Baronet was a large landowner in Huntingdonshire who expanded his family's lands considerably and rebuilt his seat at Conington Castle. His passion was clearly antiquities however and in addition to amassing a huge collection of manuscripts he researched the history of Huntingdonshire and took a trip to Hadrian's Wall in 1600 where he copied inscriptions. Much of his life was taken up by administering the Cotton Library, and he had a role as a finder of precedents for parliament, as well as being a member of the body himself a number of times. He was also a courtier, rising and falling in favour with the monarchs a number of times and constantly requiring a patron to maintain his position. He frequently used his knowledge to present proposals that helped King James and King Charles, while at other times being accused of writing seditious pamphlets. It is clear that these monarchs saw his intelligence as an asset but knew that the knowledge he collected could also be a threat to him. In his personal life, Cotton had a slightly scandalous reputation. Though there is no mention in his own papers, other sources attest that he had a possibly irregular marriage with Frideswide Faunt before he wed Elizabeth Brocas in 1593. Elizabeth was an heiress who brought him significant funds, and bore his son Thomas, who would become 2nd Baronet (1594-1662) however they had a tumultuous relationship and lived separately for possibly over a decade, though eventually they reconciled. In this time, Robert lived with the widowed Lady Hunsdon, who may have been his lover for a number of years.
