ActivityJohn Montagu, 7th Earl of Sandwich (1811-1884) was a Tory Peer who, because of his father's premature death, spent his entire adult life entitled to a seat in the House of Lords. He held office in the first two administrations of the Earl of Derby - firstly as Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms and latterly as Master of Buckhounds. Thereafter he did not hold national office except as an Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria in the year before his death. Unlike previous generations of his family he was Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire, a position which his two immediate successors would hold. This may represent a reorientation of the family away from a desire to hold national office towards an interest in local politics. Aside from his political career, he was twice married and served for a time in the military, though it is not known when he retired the lack of promotions recorded may suggest he did not serve for long.
