The lower building with the three windows was a bakehouse at about the time of the First World War. The baker's name was Billy Peak and villagers used to take their own bread to be baked

7 - Print of Church Street, Holme. Through the trees to the right is Holmewood Hall. The dutch-gabled house on the left was the village school until 1868 when the new school was built near the church. This later became the Estate Office and was demolished in 1950's Notice the cast iron lamp post at the junction - these had an oil lamp
8 - Print of Short Drove, Holme. A posed photograph, possibly taken by the Reverend George Broke, with everyone in their best clothes. The cottage on the left was demolished in the 1950's
9 - Print of the great flood at Pringle Bank, Holme. This event is well remembered in the Huntingdonshire Fens, when the harvest had to be got in by boat. Holme school log book records that the children had an extra week on the end of the summer holiday to help salvage the harvest.

12 - Print of Ivy Cottage, Church Street, Holme. In the photograph is Mr Arthur Chapman and his wife Florence with their son Peter. Mr Chapman was the engineer at Holmewood Hall and was responsible for the village pump, which was opposite the cottage. The old butcher's shop can just be seen to the left.
13 - Print of Station Road, Holme, looking westwards. The house with the hipped roof is still standing but the thatched cottage was demolished in the 1950's (see 5703/16/14) and a modern bungalow was built on the site.

The celebrations were held at the corner of Pringle Bank and Station Road, where the council houses and bungalows now stand. The children are dancing around the maypole, which still survived in 1977. The smithy in Pringle Bank can be seen at the back of this view

23 - Print of Mr Arthur Stacey standing by the mill machinery at Ellis & Everard's mill on Station Road, Holme. The mill was situated near Holme Station and used to grind corn etc. It was later made into an extension of the mill owner's/manager's house. The engine was a Blackstone made at Stamford and was installed in 1914.

The group consists of (l to r): Mrs Florrie Stacey, Mrs Childley, Mrs Helen Wade, Mr John Moyser, Mrs Lenton, Miss Harriet Burdett, Minne Binden, Fred Burdett and [?]. They were working on Park Farm for the Squire, Mr John Fielden. The harrow was used to bring to the surface the potatoes missed in the first picking.

29 - Print of Holme V.C. School Sports Day. The photograph shows the school before the new extension was built in 1956. The children are sitting on what is now the school playground. The staff include Mr Neill, headmaster, Mr N Beeton and Mr Groom.

31 - Print of Holme Station looking North. Coming towards the camera is a london-bound express pulled by an A4 engine. To the right is the Ramsey goods train waiting to leave on the Ramsey branch line, which went to the right across the Fen. The gates (replaced by a barrier in 1976) were operated by a handle in the signal box.

33 - Print of the Holme postmen Walter Burdett (who delivered in the village) and his son William Burdett (who delivered in the Fen). In 1914 William took over a smallholding and both men worked this in addition to their postal duties.
34 - Photograph of Mr Thomas (Tom) Evan Chance, the Holme postman in 1977. He delivered to both the village and the fen on the first delivery and to the village only on the second delivery. He became the postman in July 1970 and is seen here with the Christmas post

This photograph was taken at the entrance to Holmewood, which was an army camp during the Second World War (nicknamed Tin City by the locals because of the Nissen huts). After the war these huts were occupied by Holme villagers because of the housing shortage. The guard room on the right became a shop and the lady standing outside is Betty Stratton, the daughter of the shopowner
40 - Print of Lough's transport outside the mill at Sawtry. The truck on the right is a Bedford and the one on the left is an American Reo Speed Wagon. Reo trucks were produced in the mid-1930's by a company founded by R.E. Olds, who founded and then sold the Oldsmobile Co. This truck in the photograph is one of the first to be imported into the U.K. Les Lough and S Hollard are on this American lorry
