TitleCambridge Gay Group
DescriptionThe Cambridge Gay Group (CGG) was established in 1982 following the national reorganisation of the Campaign for Homosexuality (CHE) into a campaign focused organisation. The existing Cambridge branch of the CHE was dissolved and a new branch formed to support the campaigning activities of the national CHE. The social and community functions once provided by the Cambridge CHE were transferred to the new CGG. All members of the old Cambridge CHE automatically became members of the new groups.

According to its constitution, the CGG aims to:

1. Provide social, recreational and educational facilities for gay people;
2. Support and finance the Cambridgeshire FRIEND group in accordance with the National FRIEND conference;
3. Support and finance the Campaign for Homosexual Equality locally and national;
4. Do all things as are necessary, incidental or conducive in the achievement of the above objects, especially for the benefit of gay people in Cambridgeshire.

Governance of the CGG was composed initially of a Convenor, Treasurer and up to three elected members, two members of Cambridgeshire FRIEND, two delegates from Cambridge CHE and up to three additional members co-opted by the management committee.

The CGG was a membership organisation with dues contributing to Group activities, helping to finance other gay and lesbian networks as well as publishing a community newsletter. The CGG organised walks, discos, musical events, pub trips, film nights, guest speakers and other social activities. It also provided advice and referrals to members about subjects ranging from AIDS and sexual health to befriending services for individuals who had recently come out or were facing other hardships.

The CGG faced a number of difficulties in its work. It was not unknown for its social events to be interrupted, on occasion violently, by individuals hostile to the Group's aims. A major aim of the CGG was to establish a Gay Community Centre as an alternative to commercial gay venues. It was envisioned that the centre would include a comfortably furnished reception area, provide coffee and snacks, meeting facilities, office accommodation for gay groups, a switchboard for Cambridge FRIEND as well as a library and bookstall. Unfortunately financial impediments prevented the realisation of this goal.

CGG continued to operate in support of the Cambridge LGBT community into the early 2000s before winding up its activities.
