TitleAssignment of Tolls
DescriptionIn addition to toll revenue, money was also raised by mortgaging(assigning) the tolls: money was borrowed at a fixed rate of interest, and secured against toll income. Often the assignments would themselves be further assigned; see Assignments of Securities, AF44-48 below. For further information see Albert,Turnpike Road System pp.94-97.The assignments were until 1773 entered in the minute books, and numbered consecutively. Not all the assignments recorded in the minute books have survived. For separate seals and signatures, see AF50.
