TitleChatteris, King Edward Junior School (formerly King Edward Junior Mixed School and King Edward [Boys] School)
DescriptionIn 1902 the New Road School for Boys closed and was replaced by the King Edward School situated on King Edward Road. The new school could accommodate 305 boys from age eight and upwards. Mr A.J. Kidd was appointed the first Headmaster. He was an advocate of physical education, smart appearance and good attendance.

King Edward together with Hive End Infants, New Road Girls and Infants, Slade Lode Schools were jointly administered by a the Chatteris Council Schools Managers (see C/ES38B/4-6).

Kidd retired in 1930 and was replaced by Mr. W.E. Precious. During the 1930s the school conducted camping holidays, trips to London gave concerts and ran various clubs and sports teams.

In 1938 King Edward was reorganised into a junior mixed school. Junior girls from New Road School were transferred in to King Edward while senior boys were transferred out to the new Cromwell School.

During the Second World War Precious assumed control of Cromwell School and concentrated all students there in order to free up the King Edward site for the evacuated Robert Montifiore School of London. Following the war Precious retired.

Precious was replaced in 1949 by Mr D.R. Hall. Under Hall's leadership the School expanded to include to include facilities at New Road Girls School and Hive End Infants School. However space remained at a premium and in 1957 Little King Edward School was completed at the Burnsfield Infants School site. In 1968 two additional classrooms were built and students were able to return from the school outpost at Hive End. Building work continued adjacent to Burnsfield with new permanent and temporary buildings added. Hall retired in 1978 and was replaced by Mr G. Griffiths who served until 1996 when the fifth and final Headmaster, Mr Stuart Hogg was appointed.

The close physical relationship between King Edward and Burnsfield led to a joint Board of Governors to be appointed to oversee both schools (see series C/ES38E/1/1). This joint leadership continued until 2000 when separate boards were created. In 2003 it was decided to merge King Edward and Burnsfield to form the new Kingsfield Primary School.
