TitleLetter; W. Beresford, War Office, to 7th Earl of Sandwich.
DescriptionAgrees with his view that, where the Militia force in a small county like Huntingdon consists of 2 or 3 companies, it is a prudent step to make them Rifles, and give them a feeling of pride because they are different from their neighbours. This should encourage enlistment and thus increase the number of Companies in the county. Has no power to implement this view, but will pass it on to Mr. Walpole at the Home Office. Has, however, taken steps to increase the contracts for Rifle equipments and to diminish those for the regular Militia clothing and accoutrements.
