TitleLetter; Richard Anthony Reynolds, Brighton, to 7th Earl of Sandwich.
DescriptionWrites to Lord Sandwich as one of the leading figures in the county in which for long the Reynolds family has resided, in order that, if Lord Cardigan's power is able to dismiss him the service, his character may remain high in Lord Sandwich's estimation. Criticises the conduct and the whole system of command of Lt. Col. the Earl of Cardigan. Encloses copies of three letters. Enclosed: 1) Copy of letter R.A. Reynolds, Brighton Barracks, to Earl of Cardigan. Seeking authorization to contradict a report that at a large party the Earl of Cardigan replied to a question that the Captain Reynolds would never enter his house. Feels that this report conveys an impression prejudicial to his reputation. 27th August 1840 2) Letter R.A. Reynolds, Brighton, to Earl of Cardigan Since the Earl positively refuses to give any answer to the first letter begs to tell him that he is not justified in making the remarks he did. It would be best if the Earl did not make such remarks or if he waived his rank and agreed to a duel. 6th August, 1840 3) Letter R.A. Reynolds, Captain, Prince Albert's Hussars, Brighton, to George Anson Esq., Private Secretary to H.R.H. Prince Albert. Requesting that he will bring to the notice of H.R.H. Prince Albert, as Colonel of the 11th Hussars, the following statement of the events which have occurred in the Regiment. Recounts the events, including his arrest on 28th August as a result of his second letter to Lord Cardigan. Seeks that he shall not be condemned unheard. 31st August, 1840 4) Note to 7th Earl of Sandwich that the above three letters are copies of those sent to H.R.H. Prince Albert. Attached: Copy of Letter 7th Earl of Sandwich, Hinchingbrooke, to R.A. Reynolds. Replying to the letter of the 2nd Is sorry to hear of the affair but believes Reynolds has done the best thing in laying the case before the Prince. Hopes that it will end satisfactorily.
