Reference numberP76/1/1
TitleCopies of: Baptisms, Marriages, Burials. Paper sheets (7), formerly loose
DescriptionBAPTISMS: (3 sheets) 18 .... 1542 - 18 October 1730
MARRIAGES: (1 sheet) 5 July 1551 - 29 April 1731
BURIALS: (3 sheets) 25 November 1543 - 18 August 1770
These are extracts from the first two composite registers, of which only the second survives. The first sheet of BAPTISMS is entitled "The Register of Chrystenings Marrages & Buriels in Gamlingay Anno Domini 1538," & continues: 'The Names of the Chrystened in the yeare of our Lord God 1538 and of the Raigne of King Henrye the VIIIth the thirtieth in the month of September. '
From the headings on other sheets it would appear that MARRIAGES in the lost register started in 1538 & BURIALS in 1543.
There is no indication of the point at which the transcriber changes registers. Probably all in the same 18th century hand, except for one sheet of BURIALS (1620 - 1722) which is headed 'Re copied from ragged very worn copy faded, and does not correspond chronologically with the other two sheets of burials.' One sheet contains three Dissenters buried in their own Ground, but these are copied from the existing register (P76/1/2A).
The following memoranda are included: BAPTISMS deficient 1575 - 1579 . 'A birth on Easter eve the sunne entering into Taurus 12 April 1585. He is later described as 'a woefull bad Register as he could scarcely spell or write. Succession of John Toseland as Register on the death of Robert Hills, and his appointment as parish clerk 1655.
