TitleVisit of the Prince of Wales to Kimbolton Castle
DescriptionThe visit of the Prince of Wales to Kimbolton Castle in February 1868. In January 1868 Arthur Maddison wrote to Valentine Hill, the Duke of Manchester's agent, "I hear that His Royal going to pay a visit...I shall esteem it a favour if you will get me the order to take any photograph groups that may be required." He continued that he would not charge for the journey or the negatives, bot would only rely on income from the photographic orders. Fortunately he did recieve 41 orders from the house party guests, including the Duchess of Manchester, Colonel Keppel and the Duke of Sutherland. He charged 5/- for each cabinet-sized copy.
This is the group photograph of the house party gathered outside the saloon of Kimbolton Castle. William Drogo the 7th Duke of Manchester is standing in the centre of the group, bareheaded, and to his right sits the Duke of Sutherland. Above the Duke of Manchester, the Prince of Wales stands with both hands on the balcony, with Lord Hartington and Louise, Duchess of Manchester (in a riding veil) to his left. Four years before this photograph was taken, the Duchess had become the mistress of Lord Hartington, who became the 8th Duke of Devonshire in December 1891 on the death of his father. The Duke of Manchester had died in March 1890, but Louise and the new Duke of Devonshire did not marry until August 1892, and then almost in secret in a very quiet ceremony in London. From then Louise was known as the Double Duchess. After photographing the Prince of Wales, Arthur Maddison described himself as a "Royal Photographer" and incorporated the Prince of Wales feathers into the art work of his cartes-de-visite.
